Stromlo Running Festival
News Flash – Course Change for Lightning Strike 11km
The Lightning Strike 11 kilometre running event, held at 8am on Sunday the 19th of February, will now feature a new and exciting course and be held over 10 kilometres. The new course will take in the views of Stromlo and will now start and finish at the Event Hub in Stromlo Forest Park, therefore resulting in competitors no longer having to catch a bus to the start of the event. For those of you who have already paid for the bus, you will be reimbursed for this payment on the event weekend.
We look forward to seeing you all out there!
As the STROMLO Running Festival enters its fourth year, there are again a number of exciting changes made to try and improve the event for 2012. STROMLO will take place in Canberra on the weekend of the 17th-19th February 2012. On-site camping and caravan facilities will again be provided for those participants seeking an unique opportunity to submerse themselves in a weekend crammed full of running, seminars, presentations, and socialising. Organised by Run For Your Life in conjunction with Robert de Castella and the YMCA of Canberra Runners Club, the weekend promises to build on the reputation of the first three years.
Individual entry into single events continues in 2012, so if you would just like to participate in a single event you now have that option. The all-inclusive package with camping and entry into all events is still available for those looking for the complete weekend. A third option of entry into all the weekend’s activities, but without camping is also available. In 2012 catering will not be offered as part of an inclusive entry, however there will still be food available to purchase on-site, and BBQs will be provided for those who wish to cook for themselves!
The first major change for 2012 is the re-allocation of prize money in the Age-Sex Adjusted Cross Country. In total $7,000 in prize money will be available for the fastest teams and the number of team members required to yield a result in this category has been reduced to 10, however there is no limit to the number of runners in your team, your 10 best scorers will simply count towards your team result. There is still $4000 available for individual runners, so now there are some major incentives for all runners. The handicaps and rules for the event are based on your age and gender and can be found here.
The second major change for 2012 will be the addition of a 12-hour event for the ultra runners. The 12-hour will start on Saturday evening and finish on Sunday morning.
The timetable for 2012 will be similar to 2011, i.e. with the Schools Challenge, Welcome Run and Criterium Track race on Friday evening. The Age-Sex Adjusted Cross Country, along with the Sparke Helmore Corporate and Sporting Challenge will be the highlight of Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon will feature the Mt Stromlo Race, and the Lightning Strike events will again be held on Sunday morning.
Due to the lack of interest in the evening entertainment in previous years, this will no longer occur in 2012. But we are happy to announce that the seminars and presentations proudly sponsored by the Gold Coast Airport Marathon will again continue in 2012 with another exciting line up of presenters.
There are seven different running events to choose from over the weekend; providing variety and choice for every single runner, regardless of ability or experience. Catering will be provided on-site and will offer a selection of meals at affordable prices. BBQs will also be available for those wanting to cook their own meals.
So whether you are looking for a great weekend away; an event to finish off your summer; or your final training preparation for the 6-foot Track Marathon – the STROMLO Running Festival is the event for you.
