Stromlo Running Festival 2015
The STROMLO Running Festival is now entering its seventh year and in 2015 the format continues to be very similar to last year with only a few slight course adjustments – and hopefully without the torrential rain! Like last year, the event will be held in November and features 3 trail running events: a 50km, a 30km, and a 10km. The all inclusive early bird entry fee ($80 for 50km, $60 for 30km, and $40 for 10km) entitles participants to a high quality Mizuno finishers shirt (RRP $50), a finishing medal, post-race breakfast, as well as access to on-site camping. The weather in Canberra in November is also perfect for distance running with an average morning temperature range of 13-20°C.
All of the courses now start and finish from STROMLO Forest Park and the unique clover leaf designed courses ensure plenty of opportunity for spectators to support their loved ones. The choice of 3 events provides an option for runners of all levels - beginners through to the very experienced with aid stations at approximately every 5km on all courses.
The 10km course comprises of a route that skirts around the lower slopes of Mt Stromlo, providing some beautiful scenery with a few undulations, but nothing overly gruelling and is suitable for runners of all levels with no cut-off time for this event. The field will be limited to a maximum of 400 participants and the event will start at 8:00am.
Participants in the 30km event will initially complete the 10km course while then passing through the event hub before completing a second loop of 20km. The 20km loop is a challenging run which travels around the western part of Stromlo Forest featuring amazing views of the Brindabella mountains before ascending the western side of Mt Stromlo to take in all of the glory of Canberra. Some of the major climbs will provide a test for all runners and include the "Out-Back", "The Prelude" and "The Mother". The final few kilometres are a fast descent back down to the event hub and the finish line. There is a 4 hour cut-off to be considered an official finisher of the 30km event, the event will start at 7:30am and the field will be capped at 400 participants.
For those runners seeking a real challenge then the 50km could be exactly what you are looking for. The clover leaf course comprises of the 10km and 20km loops featured in the 30km event, but followed by an additional 20km loop which travels east along the Molonglo River and climbs through the Arboretum to the top of Dairy Farmers hill, providing a stunning view of Lake Burley Griffin, before returning through pine forests to the event hub and the well-deserved finish line. This event will be a tough 50km race and is intended for accomplished runners who are capable of running a marathon in under 4 hours. Although there is no qualifying performance required to enter the 50km event, in order to receive what will be a highly sought after finishers medal and t-shirt, competitors must complete the course in under 5 hours. It is important that runners are aware that a strict cut-off time of 3 hours will be applied as competitors pass through the 30km point. Any runner outside this time will be considered to be a 30km event finisher. The event will be limited to 200 competitors and will get underway at 7am.
A coffee cart will be operating from 6am on Sunday morning at the event hub. BBQs will also be available for those who are camping at the event hub and who want to cook their own meals. If you are looking for a great weekend away; an event to kick-start your summer; or for a qualifying performance for the 6-foot Track Marathon – the STROMLO Running Festival has an event for you.
